When an account, such as a credit card, auto loan, or cell phone bill, becomes indebted, the original lender may try to collect the amount owed. The lender can also keep the debt collector or sell the loan to someone who can try to collect the debt. While there are many legitimate debt collectors in the financial markets, there are also fraudsters who may try to repay you loans that you do not owe or loans that do not exist.

Ways to Find Deposit Scams:

Receiving a call, email, or letter from a loan claimant can be risky. Here are six key pointers in moving forward with your credit collection scandal:

They put pressure on you.

Credit accumulation scandals can use intimidation tactics and threats. Counterfeiters can also pull emotional cards, making you feel bad or irresponsible. They can also try to create a sense of urgency so that you can move faster and do whatever you want.

“Legitimate debt collectors can be aggressive at times, but fraudsters often use fear to get you to act quickly and ask no questions,” says Thomas Nietzsche, Money Management. A financial educator for an international, non-profit credit counseling organization. “If they are threatening you with imprisonment – or worse – it is a violation of your rights and a big red flag.”

Nietzsche says fraudsters almost always prefer non-refundable payments – think of prepaid cards, money orders, or money transfers. These forms of payment cannot be traced, and fraudsters take your money with very little chance of being caught. Be careful if they ask for payment methods that seem out of place.

If you are going to repay a legitimate debt collector, pay in a way that confirms that you have paid and the amount you have paid.
